about

"He can’t hype his own record, so I’m going to do it for him. Mr. Saturday (as his students at the seminary call him) has recently completed his second solo opus, as yet untitled, but in my head referred to for now as ‘II’, like a Scott Walker album. I contributed some one note organ and production help to ‘Concrete Poetry’, but I’ve had nothing to do with this new record whatsoever, and I honestly think it’s all the better for it. Stretching his patented ‘hackney primitive’ style out into freer explorations of six-string wrangle, it’s a purer distillation of his ur-spirit, at certain moments tender, but underpinned by key moments of angular attack. I have a confession to make: at the yearly improv/making-it-up-as-we-go-along recording sessions to stockpile new Mines material, I often look over at his chaotic tangle of too many pedals and think “what the fuck are you playing Baron, are you even listening to what else is going on??!??”. But then I get the tapes home and listen back and am almost always shocked to discover he’s somehow pulled off the trick, yet again, of being simultaneously totally off but also right in the pocket of the piece, finding his own transcendental zone to disrupt the rhythm. On a couple of MM tracks I’ve even stripped everything else back and just looped a chunk of his illogical amplifier fry. Very happy to see Independent Woman Records bringing this drone dream into the world, it needs to be out there running wild, like syphilis or a Jandek live CD." - Private Sorrow
